Dr. Valerie Weesner founded Strategic Sport Psychology to help athletes and their families make it into the Win column while enjoying themselves and each other.
“Being a family with an athlete presents unique challenges,” says Dr. Weesner. “Pre-dawn or late-night practices, games on the road, injuries, and unexpected mental barriers can make family life tough. And that can make game time that much harder for the athlete. Lack of concentration, loss of focus, reduced motivation, and unhealthy intensity can emerge in athletes in even the healthiest families.”
For more than 15 years, Dr. Weesner has coached children, adolescents, adults, and families on a variety of performance and life-skills issues. She expanded her practice to include Sports Psychology after experiencing firsthand the challenge of having two child (now adolescent) athletes.
“When my daughters started seriously competing, I realized that there were athletes of all ages, levels and backgrounds who could improve their performance by adding mental exercise to the physical preparation they were already doing,” Dr. Weesner says. “I work with athletes and coaches to help them discover their best and then visualize their best, so they can consistently deliver their best in competition.”
Dr. Weesner has trained with Dr. Bob Weinberg of Miami University, a nationally known author who has been voted one of the Top 10 Sports Psychologists in North America. “My experience with Bob Weinberg has allowed me to gain an even deeper appreciation for what coaches, athletes, and their families experience. Of course, each athlete is different, so I work with each individual to help them determine their own unique steps to success.”
In addition to her work with Strategic Sport Psychology, Dr. Weesner is the Executive Director of the Center for Child and Family Therapy in Indianapolis, Indiana.
Dr. Weesner is a member of the American Psychological Association (Divisions 47, 42, and 53), the Association of Applied Sport Psychology, and the Indiana Psychological Association.
